German Shepherd Growling: Methods To Prevent It

A large dog like a German Shepherd is terrifying enough even without growling behavior.  When growling becomes a routine for your German Shepherd, you should prevent it.

Growling is Communication?

A German Shepherd growls when he wants to communicate a message.  Sometimes, growling is appropriate, like whenever a stranger comes near, and sometimes it’s not.  Growling will likely be the first warning of biting behavior, like the German Shepherd is warning the person to stand back or else.  Most people heed a German Shepherd’s warning.

When the dog is being educated to be a guard dog, growling could be tolerable in most cases.  But you must always dissuade your dog from growling at you or all your family members.

If your dog growls when you go to your dog park and he meets a new dog, or he growls when he meets a stranger, these are not unusual dog behaviors.  Your puppy may have trouble socializing or relaxing in the presence of other folks.  However, your dog should be well-behaved when he is with you at all times.

When growling starts to be a problem, something must be done.  This usually means that you’re no longer in charge of your relationship with your dog and your dog thinks that he is the leader.

What Not To Do

Don’t confront your puppy with a punishment of sorts when he growls at you.  Confrontations will only worsen the situation.  Your dog could bite you, or your puppy could become petrified of you if you hurt him.

If your pet is growling you must have your veterinarian check him out to make sure there is nothing physically wrong with him.  In some cases there could be a physical reason for a dog’s behavior when he growls.  If the vet rules out any physical problem, then you need to follow the recommendation below.

Stopping German Shepherd Growling

Training is still the most effective way.  If your pet is growling at you then you need to enroll in a class with a good coach rather than attempting to train your pet by yourself. A schooling program can be planned when you tell the trainer the details.  Training helps re-establish the proper relationship between owner and dog and encourages your dog to look to you as the master.  Your pet will learn that he enjoys pleasing you.  German Shepherds usually love training and they love to learn so taking a schooling class with you can entirely change your puppy’s attitude and stop the growling.  It should restore your puppy’s respect for you.

Once you and your German Shepherd have restored your relationship you can deter any other growling that the dog has been engaging in.  When he growls at something or someone inappropriately you can give him a command to do something else and it will stop the growling. Your pet will be under your proper control, as he should be.

Growling can be a sign of hostility, pain or communication among puppies.  But, it isn’t acceptable for your German Shepherd to growl at you or other members of your family.  Assert your authority without aggravating your dog by way of a training program.
