Can an American Foxhound Be A Good Companion Dog

If we are to believe the tale of the American Foxhound, we would be looking at the dogs that have descended from the hunting dogs of George Washington. The father of United States was said to have been gifted French Foxhounds by General Lafayette who gained recognition because of his accomplishments in the American Revolution. The American Foxhounds were developed from these hounds that were given to George Washington.

American Foxhounds were bred to hunt in packs thus present day dogs have lived and worked in the same manner their ancestors did. The melodious voice that can be heard for miles is one of the hunting asset of American Foxhounds. Because of a high prey drive, it would be very difficult for these dogs to call off once they have found a prey. These dogs will constantly bay while following a prey and once the animal is found and cornered, the vocalization will change to signal the human hunters that follow on horseback .

Aside from the excellent hunting abilities, American Foxhounds are alsoa beautiful dog breed. The black, tan and white patches on the short coat that takes no particular shape, the large brown or hazel eyes, and the long wide ears as well as the long tail that is carried moderately high give the dog an impressive appearance. American Foxhounds are large hunting dogs but they are noted to have mild manners and gentleness especially with children. An American Foxhound is an avid hunter but it also has an affectionate and loyal personality. American Foxhounds are utilized to hunt but can these dogs adapt to being a home companion?

It is the nature of American Foxhounds to hunt in packs. As such, they are more dog oriented rather than people oriented. Modern Day American Foxhounds were accustomed to the same life their progenitors live. These dogs would thrive more in an atmosphere where they are allowed to be in the company of other dogs, to play, to roam and to hunt. American Foxhounds though can adapt to the life of a home companion.

Apartment living is not for an American Foxhound because of its high exercise requirements. This dog would be an ideal pet for an owner that loves to run and to jog. Being a hound, it would have the tendency to show the typical stubbornness of hounds thus an owner has to be able to handle the dog. These dogs are generally affectionate but they have to be socialized and to be obedience trained at an early age to tamper the innate stubbornness and to mold them into an ideal home companion.
