Norrbottenspets

Norrbottenspets was the name given to the spitz type breed that was developed in the early 1600s. The Norrbottenspets was also given the name Nordic Spitz and Pohjanpystykorva in the country where it has originated. This ancient breed was honored by being named as the national dog of Sweden. The Norrbottenspets is a breed claimed both by Finland and Sweden for its great endurance. The dog is rather small but it has a well muscled compact body.

A Norrbottenspets square shaped body is thickly covered with close fitting soft fur. The dog is insulated from very hot or cold weather by the white fur with red and brown markings. The luxuriously furred tail that curls loosely over the back is a one of the breeds attention-getting characteristics.

This dog breed was originally developed to be an all around farm dog although it excels most as a hunting dog. In spite of the small size, the dog is acclaimed for being an outstanding hunter because of its extraordinary courage and cunning hunting abilities. Honing the inbred hunting instinct of the dog is easy as its intelligence and the desire to please its people enables the dog to adapt well to training .

A Norrbottenspets is both a sight and scent hunter unlike other breeds of hounds that are either scent or sight hunters. This dog is described as foxy not because of a fox-like appearance but because of a cunning personality that is manifested when hunting. The dog will start to use its heightened senses to flush game as soon as released. Once an animal is cornered, the dog would start to bark rapidly purportedly to confuse the game and to cover the sounds made by the approaching hunter.

The Norrbottenspets is a vivacious, energetic and playful dog that bonds closely with their human family. The breed was in fact named as one the 10 top breeds acclaimed for their gentleness with children. A Norrbottenspets’ gentle temperament will not change even if it was confronted with new situations. Unlike other breeds, a Norrbottenspets will not be aggressive or react negatively if harassed or teased by children . Being a fairly healthy breed, the dog will provide the family about 20 years of companionship.
